Increasing Amniotic Fluid Levels in Pregnancy
Oligohydraminos is where there’s not enough amniotic fluid surrounding your baby. This can lead to compression of the umbilical cord or issues with fetal positioning , such as baby not turning to cephalic presentation (head-first). So, when we have a baby that’s breech past the 36 week mark and we need that baby to turn into a head-first presentation, this is something we can address.
Research tells us that when the membranes haven’t ruptured, maternal hydration either through consumption or IV can increase amniotic fluid levels. With a mild case of Oligohydraminos, this is something you can fix at home. Simply put - HYDRATE. Eat foods that are hydrating such as pineapple, tomatoes, melons, and cucumbers. Add in electrolytes with coconut water, Gatorade, pedialyte, or Propel. Popsicles are a great too.
And then once you’re well hydrated, our attempts to reposition baby will be more effective.
TL;DR Our attempts at repositioning baby will be more effective if baby has lots of fluid to move around in. Increase your hydration in your diet and you will increase your amniotic fluid.
