Lactation Boosting Superfoods

Increasing Milk Supply Through Diet

Increasing breastmilk supply through diet

Galactagogues. Have you heard this term before? Take a guess at how to pronounce it. A galactagogue is a food or herb traditionally thought to increase breastmilk production. There is no scientific evidence that this is fact, but anecdotally mothers swear by certain foods to increase their milk supply. The only proven ways to maintain a good supply of breastmilk for your baby are: nursing or pumping frequently, staying hydrated, and eating a healthy diet.

When it comes to lactation boosting superfoods, it’s not evidence-based to say that galactagogues are increasing your supply of breastmilk, but the traditional list of galactagogues are a part of a healthy diet, which nursing mothers need to maintain a healthy milk supply.

So, what are the foods?

Oats

Nuts, especially Almonds

Dark Leafy Greens

Fennel

Chickpeas

Ginger

Garlic

Papaya

Spices such as Fennel, Fenugreek, Anise, Cumin, Dill, & Turmeric

TL;DR There’s no evidence for whether or not this works. But anecdotally, OATS and ALMONDS are at the top of every list.
